Deploying
Once you find a portal that is either uncontrolled or controlled by your faction but not fully deployed to you are ready to deploy some resonators. Once you target the portal you can simply click on the deploy button. The deploy button will automatically deploy to at the first open slot the lowest level resonator that you have. If you just want to spam and create a low level portal with your lowest level resonators then this is the best idea as it will be the easiest way to fully deploy to the portal.
While this is the quickest way to fully deploy to a portal it is not the best. The best way is to target the portal and then go to the upgrade menu and then select your resonators that you want to use individually so that you can create the highest level portal without wasting resonators.
Note: The closer you are to a portal while deploying resonators the closer the resonators will be to that portal. This will make it easier for a portal to be attacked. When deploying or upgrading resonators it is best to stand with the portal on the edge of your action circle.

It is also important to note that, at higher levels, you can deploy using the “upgrade” button. This lets you deploy straight to the higher level resonators.
I’m curious if shields are more effective if resonators are closer together. Any thoughts?

They don’t appear to be. I keep failing and putting resonators close together, three shields, gets taken in under five minutes!
@WorldCommander (and anyone else) – Putting them tight to the portal is actually worse. The closer an XMP Burster is to the resonator, the more damage done. If you spread them out, it’s harder for the opposing force to take down multiple resonators at once.
For instance, let’s suppose that you have an L4 resonator nearly on top of the portal and an L1 at the 35m mark – it will take as much time if not more to drop that L1 resonator while standing at the portal as it will take to drop the L4 (no hard numbers to back this, just observational experience that an L1 far outlasted several higher level resonators that were closer to the portal).
Yes stand as far away from the portal before deploying resonators so that once all are deployed it will be a bigger field of radius so even a high lvl player cant fully damage all portals they must get closer to each for max damage.
